In a massive crackdown on workplace misconduct, Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran has ordered a high-level internal investigation into a series of shocking allegations emerging from the TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) Nashik BPO unit. Describing the situation as “gravely concerning and anguishing,” the Chairman has assured that the Tata Group maintains a “zero-tolerance policy” toward any form of coercion or harassment.
1. The Magnitude of the Scandal
What started as a single complaint has snowballed into a major criminal investigation involving senior management and the Human Resources (HR) department.
- The Charges: So far, 9 FIRs have been registered against eight senior employees of the Nashik BPO. The allegations include sexual abuse, mental harassment, stalking, and inappropriate touching.
- Religious Coercion: Perhaps the most shocking part of the case involves allegations of religious slurs and attempts at religious conversion at the workplace. Reports suggest employees were pressured to consume non-vegetarian food and follow specific religious practices.
- Arrests Made: The Nashik City Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) has already arrested 7 individuals, including a female HR manager and an Assistant General Manager (AGM).
2. N. Chandrasekaran’s Strong Statement
N. Chandrasekaran, who also chairs TCS, personally stepped in on Monday to address the crisis.
“The complaints and allegations emerging from the Nashik branch have been gravely concerning… This incident is being treated with utmost seriousness. A thorough investigation is underway to establish facts and identify all individuals responsible.”
He has appointed TCS Chief Operating Officer (COO) Aarthi Subramanian to lead the internal probe. The goal is not just to punish the guilty but to identify why the company’s internal grievance mechanisms failed so miserably.
3. The Failure of HR and Management
A major part of the probe will focus on why the HR department ignored repeated complaints.
- The “Ignore It” Attitude: According to the police remand report, when victims approached the AGM with complaints of sexual harassment, they were told: “Why do you want to get highlighted? Let it go.”
- SIT Investigation: The police have examined over 40 CCTV footages and conducted undercover operations to nab the accused. The incidents are reportedly dated between February 2022 and March 2026.
4. Demand for Pan-India Audit
Following these revelations, the IT sector employees’ body NITES has approached the Ministry of Labour and Employment. They have demanded a time-bound audit of POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) compliance across all TCS offices and other major IT multinational companies in India.
